My Story
Kamalani began with a love for clothing, but it was created with a deeper purpose.
From the time I was a little girl, I was always drawing designs. Clothing felt like my first language. I played with a mini mannequin and fabrics as my childhood toys of choice, long before I understood fashion as an industry or a business. To me, clothing was never just about getting dressed. It was about contributing to how a woman feels when she walks into a room, how she carries herself, and how confidence, softness, and strength can exist all at once.
When I decided to embark on a business venture, my intention was never simply to create a brand. I wanted a way to give back. I wanted to empower women and support women-focused nonprofits, and fashion felt like the most natural and authentic avenue through which I could do that. Creating women’s clothing became my way of building something meaningful, something beautiful that could also serve a larger purpose.
The moment Kamalani truly began was unplanned.
I was seventeen years old and supposed to meet my high school best friends. Instead, I got completely lost in drawing dress designs. Hours passed. When they finally found me, they asked what had taken me away from my phone and our plans for over three hours. The answer was simple. I was designing. They looked at what I had created and said, “Amy, you need to share these. You need to get them made. We want to wear them.”
At the time, I had no company, no plan, and no intention of launching a brand. But in that moment, something clicked. I realized my calling was not only to design clothing, but to empower women through what they wear and through what those garments could give back to the world. That encouragement from the women closest to me became the catalyst for Kamalani.
The name Kamalani is my middle name and means “heavenly child,” or “child of heaven,” in Hawaiian. To me, it represents exactly what I wanted this brand to be. Kamalani is meant to feel soft yet powerful, elevated yet gentle, much like the women I design for. I believe all strong women carry a softness within them, and that grace and femininity are powerful in their own right.
The name also reflects my belief that when women give their gifts, talents, power, and grace to others, they are gifts themselves. Kamalani has shaped not only the brand’s identity, but the way I strive to walk through life with both grace and strength.
At the foundation of Kamalani is a sense of escape and ease. I wanted to create pieces that feel subtly sexy without being loud, where confidence comes from refinement rather than excess. Every silhouette is intentionally balanced. Soft lines are paired with structure. Femininity is grounded by form. Sensuality is expressed through simplicity. Nothing is meant to feel like too much or too little. The goal is effortless elegance that feels timeless.
I draw a great deal of inspiration from women like Princess Diana and Audrey Hepburn, who I believe redefined the idea of sexy elegance. They never showed too much skin, but the skin they did show was unforgettable. They carried themselves with poise, inspiring designers to create structured, feminine silhouettes that felt regal, heavenly, and highly elevated while remaining understated. That same feeling guides every Kamalani piece.
I am naturally drawn to structured and drop-waisted silhouettes that flare with a feminine touch. My color palette reflects that same restraint, leaning into neutrals softened by thoughtful pops of light blue. Texturally, I love contrast. One of my favorite examples is the Brooke dress, which was inspired by a tulle wedding gown. While the original vision was sheer and ethereal, I chose to reinterpret it in a casual, daytime woven linen. That unexpected decision surprised those around me and has since become one of our most-loved designs.
Pieces like the Aya jacket and Logan pant continue this idea of contrast, pairing textured tweed with a stark white pantsuit silhouette. I intentionally avoid prints, choosing solid colors that allow the shape, fabric, and craftsmanship to speak for themselves.
Now at twenty-three, I am thrilled to revisit and elevate the designs that first lived on my sketchpad at seventeen. Each new collection brings a higher-end perspective to the foundation I built years ago, refined through experience, intention, and growth.
Kamalani continues to evolve, but its heart remains the same. It is a brand rooted in empowerment, femininity, and purpose. A brand created to inspire women, give back to the community, and celebrate elegance in its most powerful form.
This is my story.
This is Kamalani.
